We survived! It was a long hot day of work. It started off cold and foggy. By the time we were up for the second event the sun broke through and it got hot!

The team performed well. We placed 65th overall. Check out the video and pictures of the day.

The Team has landed

We are in California for the Affiliate Cup competition at the CrossFit games. Check back in daily to get updates.

Schedule while we are gone:

All regular adult classes will run on schedule

In Topsfield there will be no:

  • Kids class on Thursday
  • Teen class on Thursday
  • 8am running club on Saturday
  • No open weightlifting on Saturday and Sunday

July 06, 2009

This is a cool video of some teenage weightlifters training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. They took a break to mess around with some gymnastics. Gymnastics is the art of moving your body through space. Weighlifting is gymnastics applied to external objects. So formally trained weightlifters look alot like gymnasts.

Holiday Schedule

We will be closed on Saturday July 4th and Sunday the 5th.

June 26, 2009

Hey Dave,

I've been meaning to send you this message for a little while but, I've been a bit busy lately. I just wanted to thank you for driving out to my kettlebell competition a few weekends ago. I'd never competed in a kettlebell competition before and I was EXTREMELY nervous. Having you there helped me to relax. The extra support and coaching really gave me the confidence I needed to accomplish my goals that day. The one thing I love most about CrossFit (aside from kettlebells!) is the sense of community and the many good friendships I have formed with my trainers and fellow CrossFitters. I don't know anyone else that can say their trainer cared enough about them to drive 5 hours out to New Jersey to give them extra support. You were in no way obligated to do so but, you did anyway and that meant so much to me. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I'd be competing in a weight lifting competition or even coming home with a gold medal. It's because of you and everyone else at CrossFit that I am able to accomplish these things. I really appreciate everything that you, Brenty and all of the crossfit community have done for me.

thank you so much!

I'd like to thank everyone who came out to the Beverly facility Tuesday night for the Affiliate Cup Team Qualifier. A lot of people volunteered to judge reps, which is not an easy job, and everyone did great. The crowd was supportive and the athletes were amazing. Seventeen crossfitters battled it out for six slots, while ten others took a shot at the workouts. The first workout proved to be tougher than expected for the women and the time limit of 15 minutes was dropped. At the end of the night only two women could complete the workouts as prescribed; Dawn Adam-Brown and Tara Picardy. Members Marina Polcaro, Kendra Ceceita, and Tracy Conley were also close to qualifying. The men's race was a close one with nine men finishing the workouts within the time limits. Ryan Hewitt took first place on both workouts. Andy Waterson and Brent Miffitt were within seconds of each other for second and third, and Dave Picardy rounded out the team with fourth place, finishing a full minute ahead of the next competitor. Having the entire community together is amazing. We have so many great people and great competitors between the two locations. When our team gets back from California Dave and I plan to do something like this once a month! -Danny V.

We have a change to the NSCF Affiliate Cup challenge time. We have many members interested in attending this event and there are some scheduling issues. Here is the big change. We are going to hold this event on Tuesday night June, 9th from 6-8pm in Beverly (I lost bucking it out with Danny Vee). All normally scheduled classes will be canceled for this. There will be 2 workouts. After the 1st workout we are going to view the new CrossFit movie "Every Second Counts". That should get everyone fired up for the second workout. We are going to allow scaling so everyone is welcome to compete. The first heat will be as RX'D and the second will have scaling allowed.

If you are not able to make it you will be able to come this Saturday from 10-12 in Topsfield and complete the 2 wods. I am going to post the two workouts on Saturday at noon.

June 02, 2009

It has been a week since the qualifiers; my body has recovered from the workouts. I have put closure to my performance by redoing and finishing Sunday's wod and after many hours of replaying the workouts over and over to figure out where I could have done better have come to the conclusion that I did my best.

All that is left are the incredible memories of a bottomless pit of support from my NSCF family!!!!

To all those who wished me good luck before, congrats after and inspire me every day by your hard work…Thank You!

To the one who answered all my questions about running and then some desperate emails about pacing for a 2000m row…Thank You!

To those who travelled to support and cheer me and the other competitors on…Thank You!

To my friends who competed and stressed alongside me…you all rock and Thank You!

To the one who carried the bucket of chalk and water for each of us for every wod…Thank You!

To the one who trained with me almost every day for a very long time (and kicked butt himself)…Thank You!

To the one who convinced me to register, gave me confidence and endless coaching…Thank You!

To my family for the support you give and genuine excitement you show….Thank You!

And to our fearless leaders for creating such an amazing community, great coaching and encouraging so many of us to go after a goal no matter how far it may seem….THANK YOU!

The CrossFit Affiliate Cup

After heading to Albany for the North East Qualifier last weekend and seeing NSCF's Team make the commitment to the event I registered us for the CrossFit Affiliate Cup. We did not have anyone qualify for the individual games (but Dawn and Ryan were very close!) but we can go as a Team and see what we are made of.

What is the affiliate cup?

2008 affiliate cup champs. Notice how big the team is. Only 6 were there to compete. The other 11 were there as team mates to support their efforts.

What is Team North Shore CrossFit?

If you train at North Shore CrossFit you are a part of our team. We are a community who supports each other's efforts. Collectively we train and make huge strides in our performance. Like any team there are athletes, support members, coaches and a head coach. We are all athletes and support members. This thing we do would not work if we were not. Sometimes you are the athlete and other times you are there to support your team. We saw a great example of that last weekend in Albany. There were only 5 members of our team competing but we had at least 15 other members there to support them. You were in it with them. They did as well as they did because of your support and of course screaming. On Monday we did Murph in Topsfield. The roles were reversed. Those that traveled to support the team did Murph and the regional competitors were there to cheer their teammates on.

We have multiple coaches to help you succeed. When there is any kind of competition, weather it is a CrossFit comp, a 5k or a team sport, you can count on your team and coaches to support you and help with strategy to give you the tools to succeed.

If you are interested in coming out to California in July with the team, do it. It will be a great weekend. We are going to have a mini competition to determine the 6 athletes to represent our team. I would love to see everyone give it a go. If you are not one of the top 6 you are still a part of the team and will be needed at the affiliate cup to make them successful.

When?

Friday night June 12th from 6-8pm. Danny Vee and I are going to buck it out to see which facility it will be at. We are going to have 2 workouts. They will not be monster efforts like we saw at the qualifiers. But they will be well rounded. There will be a 1 hour rest between efforts and a scoring system to determine your place.

Let me reiterate what it means to be on Team NSCF: Whether you are competing or supporting the team we recommend making your travel plans and committing to the trip to California.  Like all other North Shore Crossfit outings it will be a really fun experience and a chance to see some of the best athletes in the world compete in the sport that we all have come to love, the sport of fitness.

I asked Tracey to give me a short write up of her experience so far at North Shore CrossFit.

"I have been coming to CF for nearly two years.  I was hooked from day one.  I am almost 41 and in better shape than I have EVER been in my life.  I able to do things that shock my friends....like pull-ups, handstand push-ups  and  anything related to Olympic lifting.    But ever since I signed up to participate in the Northeast Regional Qualifiers, my time at CF has taken on a whole new meaning for me.  I show up for my daily workouts about a half hour earlier each day and do some strength training.  I have a notebook where I keep track of all my workouts...and my progression...and I am very pleased.  I have been working on dips almost every day, and I can now do four dips in a row.  And I have showed up every Saturday for "Game Day" workouts at 10am....and somehow managed to finish Eva in less than an hour!

Training for this event has been such a great experience for me.....and I don't think my "training" will stop once it's over.  I would not have had the confidence to do this if it weren't for the kind words of encouragement from you, Dawn, Tara, Brent and my wonderful husband Lew.  I am so excited for this event....even if I come in last place, I am so proud of what I have accomplished so far."

Alex and Meagan 2 weeks into training at NSCF taking on Murph!

Dave, Tara, Danny, Brent & all my other fantastic NSCF trainers,

This week marks the one year anniversary for Alex and I as members of Northshore CrossFit, and I just wanted to take a few minutes to thank you all.  A few of you may have heard this story, but before Alex and I moved to Beverly and joined NSCF, Alex would take me to his gym (Boston Sports Club) and attempt to whatever WOD was listed on the Crossfit.com website.  Well, not once, but TWICE I ended up sprawled out on the disgusting bathroom floor of BSC, moments away from passing out and/or throwing up.  Even though I had been an athlete and was on some type of sports team for the majority of my life, I apparently had totally forgotten how to breathe, pace myself, and was obviously very out of shape.  Also, suffering from a knee injury for the previous few years wasn't helping anything.

Once we were settled in Beverly, Alex sought out NSCF, met Dave and more or less dragged in me to meet him as well.  After seeing the gym, being welcomed by Dave, talking through the NSCF programs, and with some "encouragement" from Alex, I decided that I'd try it for 1 month.  It was only a month, I could handle that… and worst case, if I hated it, I hadn't signed any contracts, so I could just bail!  Well, since then I've been to the gym pretty much 5-6 times a week and I have never once looked back!! Never had I ever been to a gym where the owners and trainers actually care if you show up!  I pretty much knew right from the get-go that this was the place for me to work-out.  I haven't stuck with a fitness program for this long, ever in my life… and I have no plans to quit now!

I've made tremendous strides since I started working out at NSCF… and haven't once ended up on a bathroom floor, just about ready to die!  Well, I've felt ready to pass out/throw up after workouts, but only because I've pushed myself really hard!  I can now do things I never thought I'd do… kipping pull-ups, a 500m row in under 2 minutes, double-unders, a 200 lbs. deadlift & a whole bunch of olympic lifts I never thought I'd ever even try, and the list goes on and on.  Crossfit has also helped rehab my knee.  While I still experience soreness once in a while, I am no longer compensating for the pain like I used to, I have equal strength in my legs and can actually run to my car when it's pouring rain outside without suffering from sharp, shooting knee pain!

The community at NSCF is unlike any other.  It's so unique and is truly the reason why I will continue to show up at the gym 5-6 days a week for as long as I can!  Sometimes I'm working out with complete strangers, and sometimes I'm working out with people with whom I've become pretty good friends with… either way, I feel like we are all on the same team.  It doesn't matter if you're a guy, girl, young, old, can lift 15 lbs. or 215 lbs., everyone is doing it together, and everyone knows the glorious pain that every one else is in!  This is why no matter how hard the WOD is… once it's over, I forget about all the pain and sweat, and look forward to the next one!

I know that working w/ "the public" is a really hard job, and is sometimes thankless, so I just wanted to be sure that you received my sincere thanks for the past year.  Your commitment to the programming and your clients doesn't go unnoticed.  It's very much appreciated.  Thank you for all the time and effort you all put in.

Here's to the next 12 months!!
~Meghan

Is there more to running?

The following appeared on Boston.com:

Headline: What Ruins Running

Date: Apr 28, 2009

"Tomorrow's marathoners who have suffered foot and knee injuries should ask: Is the problem their body or their shoes?"

____________________________________________________________

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/magazine/articles/2009/04/19/what_ruins_running?s_campaign=8315

This article is great. There is a guy doing revolutionary research about running and the negative effects of modern sneakers. The good news is it appears we are years ahead of the curve. Once the professor at Harvard finishes his study the running world should finally get on board with our running style. If you know any runners, send them the link.

Check out Dr. Romanov's site. He has been teaching running this way for 30 years. www.posetech.com

Over the next few weeks we are going to discount the private training rate 25% for our members looking to get in a private or two on running mechanics. Contact Dave in Topsfield or Danny in Beverly to set up a time.
